Laura:

I have driven this route many times in December and January without problem. From Denver, follow Interstate 70 all the way to Vail. Distance is about 100 miles so you should make it in around two hours.

The snow can be unpredictable at this time of year but in my experience, nothing a little care and planning ahead can't handle. The route is plowed, so closures are normally short-lived.

A four wheel drive is not necessary - your airport rental car should have snow tires so you will be OK with front wheel drive.

My advice:

- ask the rental desk clerk about the latest road conditions
- take your time and take extra care
- study a map beforehand to get the route clear in your mind
- call Colorado DOT for road conditions: 1-877-315-7623

Happy holidays!
